Measuring AI Search Results
AI visibility is harder to measure than rankings, but it can be tracked. Each month I report on:
- Brand mention rate across a fixed prompt set, by platform
- Position among brands named, and the sentiment of the description
- Citations and links to your site inside AI answers
- AI referral traffic and conversions in GA4, from sources like chatgpt.com and perplexity.ai
- AI Overview appearances for your tracked keywords
Answers vary between runs, so I track trends over time rather than reacting to a single response.
GEO, AEO, LLMO: What the Terms Mean
You will see several names for this work. Generative engine optimisation (GEO) and LLM optimisation (LLMO) both mean optimising for AI-generated answers. Answer engine optimisation (AEO) is the older term for featured snippets, voice and now AI answers. They overlap heavily, and all of them sit on top of good SEO, so I treat them as one service.
What I Will Not Do
Some providers sell prompt injection, hidden text for AI crawlers, mass-produced listicles that rank yourself first, or fake Reddit accounts. These tactics can work for a short time, then get filtered out. Worse, they can damage your brand when found. I build visibility that holds up when the models and platforms update.
Actionable tip: check GA4 for referral sessions from chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai and gemini.google.com. Even a small number shows AI tools are already sending you buyers, and which pages they land on.
