Why website migrations are the riskiest thing you do in SEO
A migration is any change big enough that Google has to re-learn your site: moving to a new platform, redesigning, changing domain or brand, moving to HTTPS, or restructuring your URLs. Businesses treat these as design or development projects, so SEO gets involved late - often the week of launch - and by then the expensive mistakes are already baked in. The result is depressingly common: traffic falls off a cliff the day the new site goes live, and it does not come back on its own.
It does not have to go that way. A migration planned with SEO from the start almost always holds its rankings, and frequently improves them, because the move becomes a chance to fix the technical debt and thin content that were holding the old site back. The difference between a migration that grows traffic and one that halves it is not luck. It is a redirect map, a staging QA pass, and someone watching Search Console the week after launch.
How an SEO migration works, step by step
1. Benchmark & crawl
Record current rankings, organic traffic, top pages and indexed URLs, then crawl the whole site so nothing gets lost. This is the baseline everything is measured against.
2. URL map & redirects
Every old URL mapped to its exact new destination as a single 301 - no chains, no dumping everything on the homepage, no 404s for pages that earned links.
3. Staging QA
On the staging site: titles, meta, canonicals, headings, structured data, internal links, image alts, sitemaps and speed - all checked before, not after, launch.
4. Launch & monitor
Remove the staging noindex, submit the new sitemap, and watch crawling, indexing and rankings daily for the first weeks, fixing regressions as they surface.
You can pressure-test parts of this yourself with my free tools - build the rules with the htaccess redirect generator, sanity-check crawl rules in the robots.txt tester, and generate the new XML sitemap - or hand the whole thing to me.
Migrations I handle
Replatforms (WordPress, Shopify, Magento, Wix, custom builds and back again), site redesigns and rebuilds, domain and brand changes, HTTP to HTTPS moves, subdomain to subfolder consolidations, merging multiple sites into one, and international or URL-structure changes. Ecommerce migrations - where thousands of product and collection URLs move at once - are where careful mapping matters most, and where I spend a lot of my time.
