Most fashion brands get ecommerce SEO backwards. They obsess over individual product pages and ignore the pages that actually rank and convert: collection (category) pages. “Womens linen dresses” is a collection page, it has real search volume, and it is where buyers with intent land. Products come and go; collections are permanent real estate. That is where the SEO effort belongs.
The second mistake is copying the manufacturer’s product description onto every product - which means your page is a duplicate of fifty other stores. Unique copy is not a nice-to-have in fashion; it is the difference between ranking and being invisible.
Keywords worth targeting
- “[material/style] [garment] [country]” - e.g. “womens linen dresses australia”. Collection-page gold: commercial intent, real volume.
- “[occasion] [garment]” - “wedding guest dresses”, “gym leggings”. Build a collection or edit for each.
- Informational long tail - “how to style [item]”, “[fabric] care”. Blog and guide content that feeds internal links to collections.
- Branded - your own name plus product lines. Cheap, high-converting, and the foundation of a defensible brand.
Pages to build
Collection pages (the money pages)
One per commercial keyword, with a genuine intro paragraph, internal links and curated products. This is your ranking engine - treat each like a landing page.
Product pages with unique copy
Original descriptions, real detail, reviews and schema. Never paste the supplier’s text. Rich, unique products win long-tail and feed Shopping.
Guides, lookbooks & brand story
Styling guides and an About that builds the brand. These earn links, rank informational queries and drive branded search - the moat competitors cannot buy.
Google Ads + SEO together
For fashion, “Ads” mostly means Google Shopping and Performance Max through Merchant Center, not text ads. Get your full catalogue into Merchant Center - you earn free Shopping listings on top of paid placements. Run paid Shopping and Pmax to drive sales now and to learn which products and terms convert, then build collection-page SEO around the winners. Always run a small branded search campaign so competitors cannot buy an ad above your own name and poach a customer you already earned.
Google Maps: usually skip it
*Unless you have a physical store. A pure online brand has no shopfront to rank in Maps, so a Google Business Profile is a low priority - put that energy into Shopping and collections. If you do run bricks-and-mortar retail, then local SEO absolutely applies and we build a store page and profile per location.
Golden nuggets
- Collections over products. Rank the category, then let it funnel to products. Brands that only optimise product pages leave their biggest keywords on the table.
- Kill duplicate descriptions. Supplier copy = duplicate content. Even three original sentences per product beats a pasted spec sheet.
- Tame faceted navigation. Filter URLs (colour, size, price) can spawn thousands of thin, duplicate pages and wreck crawl budget. Canonical and noindex them deliberately - this is the number-one technical killer in fashion ecommerce.
- Build branded demand. PR, collabs and content that make people search your name. Branded search is the one keyword no competitor can outrank you for.
