How to Use This Guide
This guide is a curriculum, not a reference library. The chapters follow a deliberate sequence. Each one builds on the one before it. If you are starting from zero, work through them in order.
Read one chapter, then apply it
The most important instruction in this page is this: do not read ahead without applying what you have just learned.
Research on active versus passive learning published by Engageli found that active learners - those who apply and practice material as they go - retained 93.5% of information after one month, compared to 79% for passive learners who consumed content without applying it. That gap compounds over a full curriculum. Reading ten chapters without doing anything is slower than reading one chapter and using it on your actual site.
After each chapter, open your site in another tab. Try the thing you just read about. Check the relevant report in Google Search Console. Look at how a competitor handles the same element. Connect the concept to something real before moving on.
The chapter order
The guide runs across nine chapters:
- How search engines work - start here if you are new. Everything else assumes you understand how Google finds and ranks pages.
- Keyword research - the foundation of any content or SEO strategy.
- On-page SEO - optimising what is on each page.
- Technical SEO - making sure Google can crawl and index your site without obstacles.
- Link building - earning authority through backlinks.
- Content strategy - building content that compounds over time.
- SEO tools - practical walkthroughs of every tool used throughout the guide.
- Measuring SEO - tracking what is working and running audits.
Each chapter contains several pages. Each page ends with a direct link to the next one, so you can follow the full sequence without ever returning to the hub.
If you already have SEO knowledge
Use the sidebar to jump to the chapter most relevant to your gaps. The sidebar always shows the full structure, highlights the chapter you are in, and expands the sub-pages for the current chapter so you can navigate within it.
If you are experienced in on-page and content SEO but weaker on the technical side, go directly to the technical SEO chapter. If link building is your gap, jump to link building. The chapters are designed to stand alone once you have the foundations.
The glossary
Every technical term used across the guide is defined in the SEO glossary. Terms are linked on first use so you can look up a definition without losing your place. If you hit something unfamiliar that is not linked, the glossary covers it.
How long this takes
You can read each chapter in 20 to 40 minutes. Applying what you have learned takes longer - and it should. Most people work through the full guide over four to eight weeks when they combine reading with hands-on practice. Rushing through it in a weekend produces the 79% retention result, not the 93.5% one. For the bigger picture - fundamentals versus competence versus mastery - see how long it takes to learn SEO.
SEO is not a topic you finish. This guide gives you the foundation. What you do with it over the months after is what determines the outcome.
Actionable tip: Before starting chapter one, write down the single most important SEO problem your site has right now. You may not know the answer yet. That is fine. Come back to that question after each chapter and see how your understanding of the problem changes.
