SEMrush

SEO tools: GSC, Ahrefs, Semrush, GA4, Surfer

Semrush is the broadest SEO platform on this list. Where Ahrefs is focused primarily on SEO research, Semrush positions itself as an all-in-one digital marketing suite - combining keyword research, site audits, backlink analysis, competitor intelligence, PPC data, content marketing tools, and AI visibility tracking in a single subscription. According to Semrush's Q3 2025 Financial Report, the platform has around 117,000 paying subscribers, making it one of the most widely adopted SEO platforms in the industry.

The breadth is the main reason teams choose Semrush over Ahrefs: when you need SEO alongside other marketing channels, Semrush consolidates the stack rather than requiring separate tools for each function.

Key features

Keyword Magic Tool. Semrush's keyword research is built on one of the largest databases available - over 25 billion keywords according to Backlinko's review - updated continuously. The Keyword Magic Tool generates thousands of related keyword ideas from a seed keyword, with filters for difficulty, volume, question-format queries, and intent. A Personal Keyword Difficulty score shows how hard a specific keyword is to rank for based on your domain's current authority, not generic industry averages.

Keyword Gap. Enter up to five competitor domains and see which keywords they rank for that you do not. The Missing tab - keywords competitors rank for that you have no presence for at all - is where to focus first. These are proven search terms with existing traffic going to competitors, which means the demand is validated. This is Semrush's equivalent of Ahrefs' Content Gap tool, and it is one of the most actionable reports in the platform.

Organic Research. Shows any domain's full keyword ranking profile, estimated traffic history, and top-ranking pages. Use it to reverse-engineer a competitor's content strategy - which pages drive the most traffic, which keywords they have recently gained or lost, and where they are vulnerable. Combined with Keyword Gap, this gives you a clear picture of both the opportunity and the competitive landscape before you invest in content creation.

Site Audit. Crawls your site across 140+ technical checks organised into thematic categories - crawlability, Core Web Vitals, HTTPS, internal linking - and prioritises issues by severity. The audit integrates with Google Search Console, so it can cross-reference Google's own crawl data with what Semrush finds. Issues are tracked over time, allowing you to confirm that fixes are working rather than just marking them complete.

Backlink Analytics and Link Building Tool. Semrush's backlink database is substantial, covering 43 trillion links across 390 million referring domains. The Backlink Audit tool scores links by toxicity and integrates with Search Console to streamline disavow file management. The Link Building Tool goes further - enter your domain and target keywords and it generates link prospects, surfaces contact information for site owners, and provides a built-in outreach workflow. This CRM-style approach to link building is something Ahrefs does not replicate natively.

AI Visibility Toolkit. The most significant recent addition. According to TechRadar's review, this toolkit monitors brand presence across ChatGPT, Google AI Mode, Google AI Overviews, Gemini, Perplexity, and other AI platforms - tracking how often your brand is cited, in what context, and how it compares to competitors. As AI-generated answers reduce traditional click-through rates, understanding your brand's presence in those answers is becoming a meaningful part of measuring SEO reach beyond rankings.

Limitations worth knowing

Semrush's interface is information-dense. The sheer number of tools and reports is an asset for experienced marketers but genuinely overwhelming for beginners. The learning curve is steeper than Ahrefs or Screaming Frog, and it takes time to understand which reports belong to which workflows.

Pricing per user is a real consideration for larger teams - additional users cost extra at each tier, which makes Semrush significantly more expensive for agencies or teams with multiple people needing access compared to Ahrefs, which supports unlimited users on its own domain verification system.

Semrush offers a 14-day free trial, which is genuinely useful for evaluating whether the platform suits your workflow before committing.

Pricing

Best for

Marketing teams that need SEO alongside PPC, content marketing, and AI visibility in one platform. Also strong for teams who want a built-in outreach workflow for link building without a separate CRM tool. Less cost-effective than Ahrefs for pure SEO work, especially when multiple users need access.
