Ahrefs

SEO tools: GSC, Ahrefs, Semrush, GA4, Surfer

Ahrefs started as a backlink analysis tool and has grown into a full SEO research platform. Its core reputation has not changed: the backlink database is the deepest available, the crawler processes approximately 8 billion pages daily, and the data freshness - backlink updates every 15 to 30 minutes - means you are working with current information rather than a snapshot taken weeks ago.

For most SEO professionals, Ahrefs is the platform they open first when they need to understand why a competitor ranks, where link opportunities exist, and which content gaps are worth building toward.

What it does best

Site Explorer. The centrepiece of the platform. Enter any domain or URL and see its backlink profile, organic keyword rankings, top pages by traffic, and organic traffic history. The backlink data is where Ahrefs leads the market - in independent testing by BestAIMarketingTools across 50 domains, Ahrefs found 27% more referring domains than the second-place tool. When you are making decisions about your link building strategy, working with an incomplete picture of a competitor's backlink profile means you will miss opportunities. Ahrefs minimises that gap.

Site Explorer is also the primary tool for competitive analysis. When a competitor ranks for a keyword you cannot crack, Site Explorer shows you which pages of theirs are ranking, how many links those pages have, and what the linking sites are - giving you a replicable roadmap rather than guesswork.

Keywords Explorer. Search any keyword across a database covering 170+ countries and see search volume, keyword difficulty, click-through rate estimates, and Traffic Potential - the total estimated traffic the top-ranking page earns, including all related long-tail variations, not just the exact keyword. This Traffic Potential figure is one of the most useful additions in recent iterations: a keyword with 1,000 monthly searches may generate 8,000 visits to the top-ranking page because it ranks for hundreds of adjacent queries. Targeting Traffic Potential rather than raw volume produces better content decisions.

The SERP overview for each keyword shows exactly what is currently ranking and why - page authority, number of links, domain strength - so you can assess realistically whether you can compete before investing in content creation.

Content Gap. Identifies keywords your competitors rank for that your site does not. Enter two or three competitor domains and Ahrefs returns every keyword they rank for that you are missing. This is the fastest way to find proven content opportunities - these keywords already have traffic going to someone in your space, which means the demand is validated. You are not guessing whether a topic is worth covering.

Content Explorer. A searchable database of top-performing content filtered by backlinks, organic traffic, and domain rating. Use it to find the highest-linked content in any niche - which tells you what type of content earns links in your industry - and to identify outreach targets for link building campaigns.

Site Audit. Crawls your site for 170+ technical SEO issues: broken links, redirect chains, missing meta tags, duplicate content, orphan pages, and Core Web Vitals problems. A 50,000-page site completes in under 20 minutes. Issues are prioritised by impact so you address the most damaging problems first rather than working through a flat list of warnings.

Limitations worth knowing

According to ALM Corp's analysis, Ahrefs functions best as a core SEO research platform rather than an all-in-one marketing suite. It does not have the PPC data, social media tools, or content marketing workflows that Semrush includes. For teams that need SEO alongside paid search management in one platform, Semrush is the stronger choice.

The lower-tier plans use a credit system that limits how many reports you can expand per day - which catches power users off guard. Most active users find the Lite plan restrictive and need the Standard tier for unrestricted use. There is no full free trial on paid plans, which makes it harder to evaluate before committing.

Ahrefs Webmaster Tools is free for any site you can verify - it gives you limited Site Explorer data and full Site Audit access for your own domains. This is a genuinely useful free entry point for site owners who want audit functionality without a paid subscription.

Best for

SEO consultants, in-house SEO teams, and agencies whose primary work is organic search strategy - competitor analysis, link building research, keyword discovery, and technical auditing. Less suited to teams who need SEO as one component of a broader digital marketing platform.
